The Happy Year of the Rabbit

At the beginning of every year, I am inspired by the animal that represents it according to the Lunar festival.
Living here in Japan, we can see images celebrating the next “Animal” in the last few months of the year. This is supposed to be a year full of creativity and hope – which we all need after times of pandemic and isolation. Moon-viewing rabbits are a popular motif in Japan – In traditional folklore, it is believed that the rabbit lives on the Moon and makes mochi there (sticky rice treat for the New Year celebration.) The Moon`s surface markings were identified with a shape of a rabbit. Rabbits are also associated with rebirth and Moon Goddess in different parts of Asia. Since the auspicious and hopeful symbolism.

Moon-viewing Rabbits with Peonies are soon to be available in my Spoonflower shop.
